What counselling is
Counselling, and how it differs from psychotherapy.
The two words are often used interchangeably, and there is no hard line between them. As a broad guide, counselling tends to be shorter-term and focused on something specific: a loss, a period of anxiety, a relationship under strain, or a decision you are struggling with.
Counselling gives you a confidential space to talk openly, make sense of what is happening and find a steadier way forward. We focus on what matters to you now, at a pace that feels manageable.
If you would like to explore longer-standing patterns in more depth, psychotherapy may suit you better. Many people are unsure which they need, and that is fine. We can decide together in a free initial consultation.
In short
- ·Counselling is often shorter-term and focused on a specific issue.
- ·Psychotherapy is usually longer-term and more exploratory.
- ·Both are confidential and led by what you bring.
- ·The line between them is fluid; we decide together what fits.
What counselling can help with
Support for the things life brings.
People come to counselling for many reasons. You do not need to be in crisis, and you do not need to have the right words ready. Some of the areas I work with include:
Anxiety and stress
When worry, pressure or panic make everyday life harder.
Grief and loss
Bereavement counselling and support with other kinds of loss.
Trauma and difficult experiences
Making sense of what happened, at your own pace.
Identity and self-worth
Confidence, shame and how you see yourself.
Life and work transitions
Change, uncertainty and decisions about what comes next.
Neurodivergence, autism and ADHD
Neurodiversity-affirming counselling for adults.
Addiction and recovery
Understanding patterns of use and building recovery.
Abuse and coercive dynamics
Recognising harmful patterns and rebuilding safety.
Counselling for relationship difficulties is available individually, or together with your partner through couples counselling.
How I work
Relational, integrative and human.
My counselling is integrative: I draw on humanistic, psychodynamic and relational traditions, informed by my training in Transactional Analysis, rather than applying one fixed method to everyone. Underneath any technique is the relationship between us. Feeling safe, heard and taken seriously is often where change begins.
You can read more on the my approach and therapeutic modalities pages.
How counselling works
Sessions and length of counselling.
Sessions last 60 minutes. Some people find a small number of sessions is enough to get through a difficult period; others choose to continue for longer. Sessions are usually weekly, and we review how things are going as we go.
Focused on what matters now
We start with what brought you, and keep the work relevant to your life.
Reviewed together
We check in regularly on what is helping and adjust the focus or pace.
No fixed package
You stay for as long as counselling feels useful, and you decide when to end.
